Logic gates are the building blocks of a modern computer.

A logic gate is a small electronic circuit with inputs and an output. The inputs are controlled by an electrical signal which can have two states - on or off. This can represent logical values true/false, or binary digits 1 or 0.

Logic gates can be combined together to create more useful components - the components which add binary digits, count electrical pulses, or store binary data. These in turn make up the computer's registers, ALU (Arithmetic and Logic Unit) and memory.

To understand these components, you first need to understand how basic logic gates work.
